Help!

I've made every effort to make this site as easy to use as possible. This section contains information about using this site, common browser functions, and the sort of system settings this site looks best with.

I. Optimal Systems and Settings

First, make sure your browser's window is maximized! If it isn't, you may see this website cut off at the sides and find it hard to read. If you're running Windows, you'll see three squares at the extreme upper right-hand of your browser's window. If the middle square shows a picture of one rectangle, click on it. Your browser's window is maximized when you see a picture of two rectangles in the middle square.

Next, this site looks best using Mozilla's fabulous Firefox browser. Visit the Mozilla website to get the latest version of Firefox and kick Internet Explorer to the curb.

It will also help if you've set your screen area to at least 800 by 600 pixels in size. If some of the graphics you are looking at are getting cut off, this may be the problem. For Windows users, click on the Start button at the bottom of your screen, then on settings, and then on "control panel." Once the control panel window pops up, double-click on the Display icon, and then click on the Settings tab. For most Windows users, there should be a slider at the bottom right side of the control panel. Sliding the bar to the right or left will adjust the size of your display settings.

You may also experience problems in viewing this and other sites if you've got a lot of toolbars cluttering the screen area, like a third-party search engine toolbar, for example. You can clean a lot of these up and get them off your screen by right-clicking on the toolbar and then deselecting from the list of toolbars which will pop up. Most people, to save screen area, use only the tool bars "Standard Buttons" and "Address Bar."

II. How to Use this Site

This site has been designed so that links are available to each section at the top of the screen and in the column to the left when you first load a page; supplemental links are available at the bottom of each page. Wherever you are, if you want to quickly zip to another section, just click on the words at the top of the page or to the left, or click on the links at the bottom of the page.

A. Definitions

Words and phrases that are coloured red and underlined are words that have a particular legal meaning. You can get a definition of these words and phrases by clicking on them; a box should pop up containing a definition. Try it out in the example below:

The Claimant then serves the Notice of Family Claim on the Respondent, the person against whom the claim is being made.

Of course, not all legal words and phrases have this handy link. You can also access a glossary of legal words and phrases in the Definitions section of this website, listed in the menu at the very top of each page.

B. Links to Outside Sites

This website also contains a lot of links to sites hosted by other people and organizations elsewhere on the web. (Links to outside sites are usually clearly marked.) If you click on these links a new browser window should pop up, and the outside site should automatically load into that window.

Please note that I take no responsibility for and make no representations or warranties about the accuracy and completeness of the information contained in outside websites.

C. Printing from this Website

Please remember that the contents of this website are protected by copyright, except as authorized by licence. Complete information about the terms under which this website may be reproduced and reused can be found in the Legal Notices section of this website. If you would like me to make an exception for a use of this website not covered by the licence, please contact me through the Feedback section of this site.

The Print function is found in the FILE menu at the top of your screen. If you click on the file menu, in most browsers a list will drop down containing a variety of functions, like SAVE, OPEN, PRINT and so on. If you want to print a page of this website and your use of the printout falls within the terms of use of this website and permitted secondary uses of the material contained in this website, click PRINT.

If you find that your printer is cutting off one or both of the margins of the page so that some text is missing, try setting your printer's page orientation to the "landscape" page setting.

III. Still need help?

First, contact the people who provide you with your internet service; they should be able to help. If you're having problem with the functioning of this website, however, please email me. I would be especially appreciative if you could notify me of broken links and spelling mistakes.
